From the Editor’s Desk: Shubh Deepawali

by IN Bureau

As the first rays of the Diwali sun illuminate our homes and streets, there is a quiet sense of anticipation in the air. By evening, millions of earthen lamps will flicker across the country, transforming cities, towns and villages into a magnificent tapestry of light. Yet, beyond the festivities, Diwali invites us to reflect upon a simple but profound truth: even the smallest flame has the power to dispel darkness.

For centuries, Diwali has occupied a special place in India’s civilisational consciousness. Rooted in ancient traditions, the festival carries stories that have travelled across generations, communities and geographies, each offering its own interpretation of light, liberation and the triumph of goodness.

The Ramayana tradition recalls the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, an occasion popularly associated with the illumination of the kingdom in celebration. In southern India, the victory of Lord Krishna over Narakasura symbolises freedom from oppression. For Jains, Diwali commemorates Lord Mahavira’s attainment of nirvana, while the Sikh observance of Bandi Chhor Divas celebrates the release of Guru Hargobind and, according to tradition, 52 imprisoned princes.

These different narratives remind us that the significance of Diwali extends far beyond a single story. At its heart lies a universal aspiration: the victory of wisdom over ignorance, justice over oppression, and hope over despair.

History, too, bears testimony to the festival’s remarkable continuity. From the writings of the eleventh-century scholar Al-Biruni to accounts preserved in the Mughal-era Ain-i-Akbari, Diwali has remained a vibrant expression of India’s cultural inheritance. Its traditions have endured through changing dynasties, evolving societies and centuries of transformation.

In December 2025, the inscription of Deepavali on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity offered another recognition of this extraordinary legacy.

But perhaps the true beauty of Diwali lies not in its grand historical narratives, but in the little rituals that bring families and communities together.

The cleaning of homes, the making of rangolis, the exchange of sweets and greetings, and the lighting of diyas all carry meanings beyond their immediate appearance. They speak of letting go of what has accumulated, welcoming new possibilities, expressing gratitude and strengthening the bonds that sustain us.

As we celebrate Diwali this year, these values deserve renewed attention.

We live in a world marked by uncertainty, divisions and relentless change. Technological progress has connected us in unprecedented ways, yet genuine human connection often remains elusive. Economic aspirations continue to shape our lives, but prosperity without compassion can leave societies poorer in spirit.

Diwali offers us an opportunity to reconsider what it truly means to illuminate our world.

Can we bring greater kindness into our conversations? Can we replace prejudice with understanding, indifference with empathy, and cynicism with hope? Can we ensure that the prosperity we seek also creates opportunities for those around us?

These, perhaps, are the questions that lend the festival its deepest contemporary relevance.

The humble earthen diya offers a beautiful lesson. It does not seek to conquer the darkness of the entire world. It simply burns, illuminating whatever lies within its reach. And when countless such flames come together, the landscape itself is transformed.

On this Diwali morning, as we prepare to welcome light into our homes, let us also make room for it in our thoughts, actions and relationships.

May this festival inspire us to celebrate not merely the triumph of light over darkness, but our shared responsibility to become a source of light for others.

From all of us, we wish you and your loved ones a joyous, peaceful and prosperous Diwali.
