Covid cases jump 50% in Delhi

The number of coronavirus cases in Delhi jumped by 50% to 2,716 on Saturday the highest level since May 21 when around 3,00 cases were recorded.

The number of coronavirus cases in Delhi jumped by 50% to 2,716 on Saturday the highest level since May 21 when around 3,00 cases were recorded. One death was also registered due to the disease.

The positivity rate has also gone up to 3.64 per cent which indicates that infections are likely to surge further.

On Friday, the national capital had recorded 1,796 cases and a positivity rate of 1.73 per cent which had gone up from 1,313 infections on Thursday, according to official figures.

The increase in fresh cases taking place amid a significant jump in cases of the new Omicron variant in the city.

The city has closed down schools, cinema halls and gyms, set 50 per cent occupancy rules Delhi Metro and private offices and clamped a night curfew to contain spread of the disease.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Saturday said whether more curbs need to be imposed in the national capital will be reviewed although hospital admissions are not worrying so far.

He also said that 3,000 separate beds were being kept ready for children as part of the preparedness to tackle the disease,

The government has also urged people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour to prevent spread of infections and avoid a third wave.
