Watch: Villagers make plates and bowls from local areca leaves to fight menace of single-use plastic goods

Screengrab from the video.

In order to fight the menace of single-use plastic products that are wreaking havoc in the environment, the Indian government is encouraging villagers to replace these with products made from local plants that are available in abundance and biodegradable.

Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan has shared a video on social media that shows villagers making plates and bowls from locally available areca leaves.

Unlike single-use plastic products which are widely used in weddings and parties, the areca leaf products are biodegradable and environment-friendly.
