PurEV electric scooter goes up in flames on Chennai road sparking safety concerns

Screengrab from the viral video.

An electric scooter made by Hyderabad startup PureEV burst into flames at Chennai on Wednesday raising concerns about the safety of such electric vehicles. The incident comes merely two days after a brand new Ola Electric scooter caught fire in Pune.

A viral video of the incident shows plumes of smoke billowing from the electric scooter parked on the roadside in Manjampakkam, a residential colony in north Chennai.

On March 28, a video on social media showed Ola's S1 electric scooter catching fire in Pune. The EV was also parked on the roadside when the incident took place.

Reacting to the incident, Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said in a tweet: "Safety is top priority. We're investigating this and will fix it."
