Video: Flood water sweeps SUV off bridge in Nagpur district, 3 killed and three missing

Three people were killed and three are still missing after a Scorpio SUV was swept away by flood water while crossing a bridge on Tuesday in heavy rain in Saoner near Nagpur.

The Scorpio was passing through Nandagomukh bridge near Saoner about  40-kilometres from Nagpur on Tuesday when the tragedy struck. Some onlookers recorded the horrifying incident.

"The SUV with eight passengers was crossing a bridge that did not have any railings. The water flowing over the bridge swept away the vehicle. While two passengers swam to safety, we have recovered the bodies of three persons and three others are missing," a police official was quoted saying by news agency PTI.

The search for the missing persons is underway, police said.

The eight people from Multai in Madhya Pradesh had come to Nagpur to attend a wedding and the tragedy struck while they were returning home.

The dead have been identified as Roshni Chaukidar (32), Darsh Chaukidar (10) and SUV driver Liladhar Hiware (38).

Meanwhile, the death toll due to rain-related incidents in Maharashtra has gone up to 83 between June 1 and July 10, the state disaster management authority said in a report on Monday.

Nashik district in North Maharashtra recorded the highest number of deaths at 12 followed by four in Nagpur.
