Earthquake rocks North-east states, tremors felt in Kolkata too

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred near the India-Myanmar border on Friday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology.

Tremors were felt across Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Assam. Witness accounts on European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre's (EMSC) website said that tremors of the earthquake were felt as far away as Kolkata.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 183 kilometres east of Chittagong in Bangladesh. According to the Seismology Center, the quake occurred at 5.15 am.

There were also reports of a second earthquake at 5.53 am.
