Assam’s Tezpur litchis exported to London!

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the export of famous Tezpur litchis to London

Assam’s Tezpur litchis are going places as they are making their presence felt in places as far away as London. Yes, a batch of these delicious fruits, which have a Geographical indications tag, are going to be sent to the United Kingdom.

The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched the export in a programme at the Tezpur Convention Centre, Sonitpur district.

In his tweet, Sarma said: “Delighted to launch the export of Tezpur Litchi, which has been given geographical indication (GI) tag for its excellent quality & pleasant flavor, to London. The export of litchis will help in uplifting the economic condition of small & marginal farmers in the dist.”

The fruits will be exported by Agnigarh Farmer Producer Company through Kiega Exims.

The GI tag was received by Tezpur litchis in 2015 for its excellent quality, pleasant flavour, juicy pulp and attractive colour. Interestingly, in its broad term Tezpur litchis covers five varieties of litchi grown in and around Tezpur.

A blueprint has been prepared by Sonitpur district administration to help litchi farmers to expand their cultivation area by an additional 200 bighas of land.
