Delhi recorded 299 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday which represents a close to 50 percent jump over the 202 cases registered on the previous day.

This has given rise to concern as the coronavirus appears to be staging a comeback after the national capital had opened up all activities and life was largely back to normal.

While no death due to the highly contagious disease was reported in the last 24 hours, the daily positivity rate has gone up to 2.49 per cent.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had earlier said the city government is keeping a watchful eye on the situation and there is no reason to worry until a new variant of concern is detected.

He had said that the daily cases in Delhi are being reported in the range of 100-200 and a close watch is being kept on hospital admissions which were going down.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi had touched a record high of 28,867 on January 13 this year during the third wave of the pandemic and the positivity rate had shot up to 30.6 per cent.

Delhi had recently stopped imposing fines for not wearing masks in public places after a decline in Covid cases. This had in effect made wearing masks optional.
