Extraordinary tales of survival continue to surface even as the death toll in the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday has surpassed 28,000.

Video footage showed a two-month-old baby being rescued yesterday from under the rubble in Turkey’s Hatay province as the crowd clapped and cheered. The child was found alive nearly 128 hours after the earthquake.

Among those who were rescued five days after the quake are a two-year-old girl, a six-month pregnant woman and a 70-year-old woman, Turkish media reported.

However, hopes of finding more survivors have begun to fade as rescue teams still search under the rubble in sub-zero temperatures.

According to a BBC report, German rescuers and the Austrian army paused search operations on Saturday, citing clashes between unnamed groups.

Security is expected to worsen as food supplies dwindle, one rescuer said.

And nearly 50 people have been arrested for looting, with several guns seized, local media reported.
