Watch: Strong earthquakes jolt Tajikistan-China border zone

Several strong earthquakes shook the territory of Tajikistan on Thursday morning with tremors also being felt in regions of China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

The first earthquake of about 6.8 magnitude was reported at 5:37 AM local time with the epicentre located in the Gorno-Badakhshan region southeast of the country’s capital Dushanbe.

Initial reports suggested that the earthquake did not cause any loss of life or other damage. China’s Earthquake Networks Centre meanwhile said that some shocks measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale.

The famous Lake Sarez is also located in the area which is close to China’s far-western Xinjiang region.

Tajik experts reckon that in case of Sarez water breach, not only residents of Badakhshan villages of Tajikistan, but also residents of other downstream countries of Central Asia will face danger.
