Russia quietly strengthens Eurasian partnerships despite war in Ukraine

Russia continues to expand strategic partnerships, alliances and defence cooperation with several countries of the Eurasian region even as conflict with Ukraine continues to show no signs of de-escalation.

On Tuesday, during a session of the Armenian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation held in Yerevan, the two countries emphasised the importance of strengthening and developing bilateral military-technical relations.

The meeting took place as crews of the MiG-29 multipurpose fighters from the Russian air base of the South Military District stationed at the Erebuni airfield worked out the techniques of modern air combat.

The pilots conducted training air battles, intercepted and hit manned and unmanned aerial vehicles of a mock enemy, and also evaded the attack. They also worked out interaction with flight control groups and units providing flight shifts.

Similar training flights are being conducted by pilots of the army aviation of Russia’s Central Military District in the mountains of Tajikistan on Mi-24 combat and Mi-8MTV5-1 military transport helicopters.

As part of combat pairs, pilots improved their helicopter control skills when passing mountain gorges, flying over peaks and rocky areas, landing helicopters on sites located at an altitude of up to 3000 metres above sea level.

In addition, flights at extremely low altitudes were practiced, allowing the most effective use of Russian aviation in mountainous areas and countering illegal armed groups armed with man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems.

The 201st military base stationed in Tajikistan is Russia’s largest military facility outside its borders. It is located in two cities – Dushanbe and Bokhtar. It consists of motorized rifle, tank, artillery, reconnaissance units, air defence units, NBC defense and communications units.

At the airfield of the Russian military base in Kyrgyzstan, the paratroopers are practising jumps from a multipurpose Mi-8MTV helicopter.

Servicemen of the joint Russian military base also transferred humanitarian aid to one of the city mosques in Bishkek during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
