PM Modi to visit USA for first in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be travelling to the US next week to attend the first in-person Quad Leaders' summit being hosted by US President Joe Biden in Washington on September 24.

Along with Australian PM Scott Morrison and Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga, Modi and Biden will review progress made since their first virtual summit held on March 12, earlier this year.

Afghanistan and the current security situation in the region, along with issues of shared interest, are also expected to top the agenda of the quadrilateral framework.

India's Ministry of External Affairs said Tuesday that, as part of their ongoing efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, the leaders will also review the quad vaccine initiative which was announced in March.

"They will also exchange views on contemporary global issues such as critical and emerging technologies, connectivity and infrastructure, cyber security, maritime security, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, climate change and education," said the MEA statement.

The Summit would provide a valuable opportunity for dialogue and interactions among the leaders, anchored in their shared vision of ensuring a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

PM Modi will also address the General Debate of the High-Level Segment of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 25 in New York.

The theme for this year's General Debate is ‘Building Resilience through hope to recover from Covid-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalise the United Nations’.

After Bangladesh in March, this will be the Indian PM's only second visit to a foreign country since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
