Kathmandu: Nepalese protest against China over border encroachment

Nepalese people protested against China over the illegal encroachment of Nepal's sovereign territory by its northern neighbor in Humla District. The protest was observed in front of the Chinese embassy in Nepal's capital Kathmandu.

People raised slogans against the encroachment and wanted that China leave Nepal's territory immediately and respect the bilateral border treaty. A number of protesters, including young people carried placards that asked China to back off.

The Nepalese media had widely reported the construction of 11 cemented buildings in the Himalayan nation's territory by Chinese security forces in a remote area of Humla district. However, the Chinese embassy maintained that the buildings were verified to be on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border and asked Nepal to reverify its position.

The occupied area is remote from Nepal's district headquarters, considered to be barren, unused and treacherous, but the Chinese can access it easily due to proximity and roads. A few months also, a Nepalese journalist Balaram Bania had reported that China had intruded upon Nepalese land and occupied Rui village. The journalist was found dead a few weeks later.

China still has a medieval mindset and follows an expansionist policy where it tries to occupy more land from its neighbors. Right now China is having numerous border disputes with neighbouring states both on land and on sea. These include countries like India and Bhutan besides disputes those in the South China Sea like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and many others.

The Nepalese people also demanded reopening of two border points between Nepal and China that were shut 10 months ago. Tatopani in Sindhupalchok district and Rasuwagadhi in Rasuwa district were shut even before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, due to which imported goods worth billions of rupees got stuck on the border..
