Coronavirus claims several prominent lives in Bangladesh

A number of prominent people lost their lives to the coronavirus pandemic in Balgadesh. This includes Junior Minister for Religious Affairs – Sheikh Abdullah, and Kamrun Nahar – wife of the Health Secretary. Both passed away at the Combined Military Hospital over the weekend.

The minister Sheikh Abdullah had chest pain and breathing problems. He possibly died on his way to the hospital. Minister for shipping, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said: "His sample was taken for coronavirus test after his death and today (Sunday) it came positive."

Earlier on Saturday, former Health Minister Mohammed Nasim passed away at a Dhaka hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for COVID-19. Government spokesperson Chowdhury said, Nasim, who had held the health portfolio between 2014 and 2019, was hospitalised on June 1 after having tested positive for the coronavirus.

Kamrun Nahar, wife of Health Secretary Abdul Mannan, too died of coronavirus at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Saturday. She was earlier admitted to another hospital in Dhaka after having tested positive for coronavirus. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the military hospital, were she passed away.

A couple of other ministers are reported to be undergoing coronavirus treatment.

Over 1,000 doctors and 1,000 nurses too have been found infected with Covid-19. Bangladesh has overtaken China in the total number of coronavirus cases and is now 18th on the list of most-affected nations, according to data by John Hopkins University..
