Cloudburst in Uttarakhand claims three lives, heavy rains likely to lash state today

At least three people were killed and four others are reported missing after a cloudburst in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand late on Sunday night.

" Three people died and four people were reported as missing after a cloudburst in Mando village in Uttarkashi district," Inspector Jagdamba Prasad, Team Incharge, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The Indian Meteorological Department or IMD has forecast isolated, extreme heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand for today. The western Himalayan region (Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) and adjoining northwest India (Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP and north Madhya Pradesh) are also likely to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rains during the period, the IMD report said.

Last week, a landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, blocked the Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway which leads to the India-China border.

A cloudburst had also triggered flash floods in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala last week sweeping away buildings and cars and forcing the airport and roads to shut down.

Officials had issued an advisory and requested people to put their travel plans on hold for now. , at least until the rain goes away.

"People are requested to postpone their travel plans to Dharamshala to avoid any inconvenience," the Deputy Commissioner of Kangra posted on their official Twitter account.

"Tourists who are already in Dharamshala are requested to stay put as heavy rains have damaged the roads, impacting the movement of traffic," the advisory said.
