World Press Freedom Day is an annual event that takes place on May 3rd. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold this fundamental right.
The day serves as an occasion to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
