Operation Smiling Buddha | 47th Anniversary of Pokhran Test 1974 | When India Became A Nuclear Power

India marks the 47th anniversary of the country's first nuclear test which took place in barren deserts of Pokhran, Rajasthan, announcing India as a nuclear power. Codenamed 'Smiling Buddha', the test took place on May 18, 1974. Raja Ramanna, then director of India’s premier nuclear research institute Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) conveyed the message “The Buddha has finally smiled” to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
