Douglas Smith of United Kingdom’s Hertfordshire, has done it again as he has grown a record 1,269 tomatoes on one stem. Last year in September he discovered this stem that had more than a thousand cherry tomatoes on it and now it has entered the Guinness World Records.

Interestingly, he broke his earlier record of 839 which he had created last year again in September 2021 a few weeks before making this big discovery. The record before this was for 488 tomatoes which had not been broken for over 10 years.

While applying for this new GWR Smith said: “After breaking the UK record for the largest tomato in the UK in 2020, with a 3.106kg (6.85lb) tomato, I sought a new challenge for 2021.” Not just satisfied with setting records which were United Kingdom specific, Smith, who is an IT manager, took an analytical approach to farming tomatoes.

Besides studying different scientific papers, he also got soil samples tested in the laboratory.

These tomatoes were grown in Smith’s back garden greenhouse where he spent four hours a week looking after them.

The tomatoes were counted by an independent horticulturist.

Smith does not grow just tomatoes. Recently he grew a supersize sunflower. He told the BBC that he “likes to run little experiments with other giant veg and giant crops.”

This year he plans to grow aubergines, potatoes and peas.
