Kerala’s Konni Elephant Camp going for makeover with 3D theatre

Kerala’s major tourist attraction, the Konni Elephant Camp located in Pathanamthitta district will get a major makeover to draw more visitors. Among the many projects proposed at the camp is a 3D theatre.

This idea of having a 3D theatre was to provide the visitors, among whom there is a large number of children, a unique experience by taking them on a virtual wildlife trip. This will also help them to know and get educated about the importance of wildlife and the need to protect it.

In order to make the visit informative, the theatre will also show short videos on how abandoned baby elephants make it to the camp and how they are looked after.

Sharing details about this, Ayush Kumar Kori, the Divisional Forest Officer of Konni said that the building to house the theatre has already been identified on the premises of the camp. They are expecting to start the work on the project before the monsoon sets in.

The theatre is expected to cost between Rs.25 to 30 lakhs.

Apart from this, some other projects are in the pipeline to make the Konni camp more attractive. The camp is important for the Kerala Forest Department as it generates a lot of revenue. It houses six elephants who are Kochayyappan aged one, Krishna nine years old, Meena, 31, Priyadarshini, 38, Eva, 20 and Konni Neelakandan, 25.

The oldest jumbo is Priyadarshini who arrived in the camp in 1992 while the youngest is Kochayyappan, who is the star of the camp. He fell into a canal near the Kochandi check-post and was rescued on August 19, 2021.
