The consignment of Kew pineapples from Tripura being handed over to Bangladesh authorities at the Akhaura integrated check post
As a mark of goodwill, Tripura has sent 100 cartons containing 750 kilograms of Kew variety of queen pineapples to India’s neighbouring country Bangladesh.
This consignment of the Tripura’s State fruit was sent to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and was handed over to Bangladesh authorities at the Akhaura integrated check post. The PM had sent 800 kilograms of seasonal mangoes to Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha and other dignitaries of the State, recently.
Incidentally, the Kew pineapple was declared State fruit of Tripura in 2018,
Talking to the media after handing the consignment of pineapples, the State Agriculture Assistant Director Dipak Baidya said: “It is a goodwill gesture to prove the good and sweet relations between our two countries with this consignment of sweet fruit. We are tied in fond memories with Bangladesh since 1971. We want to relive those memories.”
Last year in July too Tripura had sent a 650 kilos of pineapples to Bangladesh as return gift after PM Hasina had sent a goodwill gift of 300 kg of Haaribhanga mangoes, a special variety of the fruit grown there, to Biplab Kumar Deb, the then Tripura Chief Minister.
The State has an estimated production of 1.28 metric tonnes of pineapple every year which is grown across 8,800 hectare orchards.
