Torrential rains and increased water flow in the Chakki river has washed away the road leading to the Pathankot airport in Punjab.

Pathankot Deputy Commissioner Harbir Singh told the news agency ANI that the area comes under the Himachal Pradesh government and that the matter had been taken up with the neighbouring state.

The river is a tributary of the Beas. It flows through Himachal and Punjab and joins Beas near Pathankot.

There has been heavy rainfall in Himachal in the past few weeks. Last week, the Beas river had risen above the danger mark due to continuous rainfall in the region.

A day before, a part of the Badrinath National Highway-7 (NH-7) washed away due to the rising water in the Khachda drain located at Lambagad, Uttarakhand.

The central weather forecasting agency had warned of heavy rainfall for the next four days starting July 29. The department had predicted heavy rain over Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri, Pauri, Champawat and Bageshwar.

While there is no rain forecast for Punjab, widespread to moderate rainfall is likely to occur over Himachal and Uttarakhand during the next five days.
