Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that India is working to become Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) in the defence sector and for the first time since Independence, the involvement of the private sector in the production of defence hardware is being encouraged.</p>

Speaking at a webinar for effective implementation of Union Budget provisions in the defence sector, the Prime Minister said a part of the money has also been reserved for domestic procurement in the defence capital budget.</p>

Modi said the Centre has made a list of 100 items for import embargo so as to enhance India&#39;s manufacturing capabilities. &quot;I assure the industry that we will do away with the strategy to import defence goods which can be designed and manufactured in India. I regard the defence import restriction list as actually a positive one and it will boost indigenization drive through private companies,&quot; Modi said.</p>

&quot;We&#39;ve to build an image as a leading defence exporter globally and strengthen the image as well.&quot;</p>

&quot;India had age-old experience in making arms, military equipment but after Independence, this capability was not strengthened. India is now committed to enhancing capabilities, capacities at a fast pace. With the establishment of the chief of defence staff post, bringing uniformity in the procurement process, induction of equipment has become easy,&quot; Modi said.</p>
