"The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored," PMO India tweeted.

The account has now been restored and the malicious tweets have been deleted.

According to screenshots shared by some Twitter users, the malicious tweets put out from PM Modi's @narendramodi account stated: "India has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and distributing them to all residents of the country."

The tweet was soon deleted but meanwhile #Hacked began trending in India.

Twitter said it had investigated the matter and that it appeared that the account “was not compromised due to any breach of Twitter’s systems”.

A company spokesperson said that Twitter has “24X7 open lines of communication with the PM’s Office”, and “necessary steps to secure the compromised account” were taken as soon as the social media giant was informed about the hacking.
