India’s Consul General in touch with Punjab students in Canada over visa papers issue

Chandigarh: India’s Consulate General has come forward to help the 700 Punjabi students who are facing deportation notices due to alleged misrepresentation of facts in their applications for visas as they appear to be victims of a fraud committed by a Jalandhar-based travel agent.

India’s Consul General in Vancouver Manish Kumar called up this reporter to get more details about the fraud committed by the agent. Telephone numbers of some of the victim students were then shared with the Consul General.

Chamandeep Singh Batth and Inder Singh, both affected students, told indianarrative.com that officials of the Consulate General had invited some victims of the fraud to meet them on Friday to discuss the issue.

The students were apparently not aware of all the details as the forms had been filled by Jalandhar travel agent Brijesh Mishra who is reported to have cheated him.

Extending support, different Gurdwara committees in Toronto have also approached the beleaguered students.

The news first reported in India Narrative was later picked up by most media outlets in India. The matter is now being widely reported in Punjab.

The parents of the students are yet to get an FIR registered against the agent. Meanwhile, Brijesh Mishra’s firm Education and Immigration Services in Jalandhar continues to remain closed. There is no trace of Mishra.
