The Greater Chennai Traffic Police is gearing itself and its officials to deal more effectively with violations by vehicle drivers. For this purpose, the cops have been provided with two new interceptor vehicles that have several cutting-edge features.
These vehicles are fitted with cameras that can rotate 360 degrees and have the automatic ability to recognise number plates and it also has a 2D radar system that is capable of capturing all traffic violations including riding without a helmet, driving/riding while using a mobile, speeding and triple riding among others.
These vehicles can capture the violations in both dynamic and static mode and this is the first time in south India, such a system is being introduced for monitoring of traffic. Further, challans will be generated on the spot once there is validation by the control room to make law enforcement more effective.
Apart from these vehicles the traffic police personnel were provided 50 breathalysers for detecting drunk-driving offences. Each of these cost Rs.37,996. These breathalysers have a high-definition camera which captures the face of the blower clearly and this information is directly transferred to the service through a SIM.
Besides this, the traffic cops were also provided with baton lights, barricade blinker lights, and megaphones, among other things.
To monitor the traffic situation in the city in real time, tripod cameras will be set up. These will have SIM cards to enable them to instantly transmit the visuals. With the help of these cameras the police can monitor traffic in the city and take preventive and corrective steps in case there is a jam or hold up. Officials said this facility will be very helpful during special events and VIP movements.
