Brave lady vet rescues leopard from 25-foot deep well near Mangaluru

A brave woman veterinarian rescued a leopard that was stranded in a 25-foot deep well for two days after falling into it accidentally near Kateel on the outskirts of Mangaluru in Karnataka.

The lady vet, Dr Meghana Pemmaiah, was lowered into the well in a cage and she used a tranquilizer gun to sedate the leopard. A local youth then also entered the well to help her put the animal in the cage after which it was lifted up to the top.

The 31-year-old vet told the Times of India that she had to keep in mind that the leopard had not eaten for two days and was dehydrated.  However, Dr Meghana said she was confident about her safety because of the cage.

She said that she was lucky to get the leopard in a position where she could sedate it with her first shot. Dr Meghana added that she was also lucky that the leopard was completely sedated 15 minutes after the shot.

The forest department officials had tried to rescue the leopard earlier but had failed in their attempt. The team of veterinary experts were then called in to help carry out the mission.

Dr Meghana and her husband Dr Yashaswi are part of the team at Chitte Pilli, a wildlife rescue and research centre at Mangaluru.
