Mumbai recorded a 34% jump in Covid cases on Tuesday with 10,860 fresh cases during the day.

The number of new Covid cases in Maharashtra went up by 51% to 18,466 from 12,160 on Monday. The state recorded 20 Covid deaths in the last 24 hours.

Of the total fresh cases in Mumbai, 834 patients needed hospitalisation while 52 patients needed medical oxygen as well, according to the official daily bulletin.

Presently, the city has over 47,000 active cases of which 4,491 patients are hospitalised.

Omicron, the new highly transmissible Covid variant, is triggering the current surge in cases in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. The national capital is being put under a week-end curfew to contain the spread of what is being seen as a third wave.

Maharashtra has so far reported 653 patients infected with Omicron, and most of them have been from Mumbai (408), followed by Pune (71).

Across the city, 16 containment zones have been identified and 369 buildings are currently sealed.
