India’s daily count of fresh Covid-19 cases slows to a 50-day low

India’s daily count of fresh Covid-19 cases came down to 1.52 lakh on Monday, the lowest level in the last 50 days, indicating that the second ferocious coronavirus wave sweeping across the country has started receding, Health Ministry data shows.

The country has now recorded less than 2 lakh new cases of the deadly disease for four consecutive days now. This is down to less than half of the over 4 lakh cases that were being registered in the early days of May.

India has been witnessing a continuous fall in the active caseload, which currently stands at 20,26,092 as the number of patients recovering from the coronavirus disease has exceeded the number of fresh cases for 18 days in a row. The total number was around 37.5 crore on May 18.

There were 85,288 more recoveries reported during the last 24 hours as compared to the number of new cases.

Vaccination drive

India has so far administered 212,066,614 vaccine doses which works out to roughly 15.23 per cent of its population has got either one or both the vaccine shots. Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (26964341), Uttar Pradesh (22846304), Rajasthan (21511330), Gujarat (20673034), and West Bengal (18391523). Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Delhi (340785), Kerala (330583), Gujarat (323661), Uttarakhand (307425), and J&K (286842).
