The daily count of fresh Covid-19 cases recorded in Delhi surged past the 1,000 mark on Wednesday, the highest since February 10 this year, data released by the state government showed.

The number is the highest in 69 days as Delhi had reported 1,104 cases on February 10.

The positivity rate has also gone up to 5.7% in the 17,701 samples that were tested for COVID-19. This has given rise to concern that the outbreak may be spreading quicker than thought earlier.

The government has once again made it mandatory to wear masks in public places and a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on those not observing the protocol.

However, there is some consolation in the fact that hospital admissions still remain low. Only 91 people were admitted to the city’s Covid hospitals. Out of a total of 9,737 available beds, 99.07% beds continued to remain vacant, which according to health experts was a positive sign.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi had touched the record high of 28,867 on January 13 this year during the third wave of the pandemic. The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6% on January 14.
