Covid 19 surges in Delhi’s Tihar and Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail as third wave strikes

Covid-19 is surging the prisons in Delhi and Mumbai jails as third wave continues to spiral in India.

66 prisoners and 48 staff have tested Covid positive in three different prisons in Delhi, news agency ANI reported quoting officials on Tuesday.

If the 66 inmates, 42 are from Tihar jail, and 24 are from Mandoli prison. Among the 48 impacted staff, 34 are from Tihar, eight from Mandoli and six from Rohil jail.

In Mumbai, 30 prisoners tested Covid positive at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, official sources said on Tuesday. The inmates have been isolated inside the jail.

On Monday, Mumbai recorded 13,648 new cases of Covid-19. A day earlier 207 people had been infected with the Omicron variant of the virus.

Faced with the Covid surge, the Maharashtra government has imposed a night curfew between 11 pm to 5 am starting Monday as part of a string of restrictions to curb the spread of the disease. These include closures of swimming pools, spas, zoos, museums, and entertainment parks. With a few exceptions’ schools, colleges and coaching institutes will also remain closed till February 15.
