Ukraine divides corporate America as Coca Cola, PepsiCo, McDonald’s continue their operations in Russia

Several prominent US companies including Coca Cola, PepsiCo, Mondelez International maker of Oreos and Ritz Crackers and Cadbury’s, Mc Donald’s and KFC are among those that continue to operate in Russia even as Washington and other European Union nations imposed stringent sanctions to isolate and choke Moscow’s economy.

However, pressure is building on these companies to pull out of Russia especially as several multinationals have already exited the country. The companies came under attack even on social media with #BoycottMcDonalds and #BoycottCocaCola trending through the weekend and even on Monday.

These companies have refrained from making any comment on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the New York Times, New York state’s pension fund has come out strongly against these companies saying that they ‘need to consider whether doing business in Russia is worth the risk during this extraordinarily volatile time.’

Just last year, KFC opened its 1000th outlet in Russia.

A few of these companies have also been distributing food to those who are in need.

Other behemoths such as Nike, Apple, Google have announced suspension of their operations in Russia.

iphone maker Apple Inc also announced halting sales of its products in Russia. In the wake of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the company said that it stands “with all of the people who are suffering as a result of the violence.”

That apart, the iphone maker has also disabled both traffic and live incidents from Apple Maps in Ukraine as a safety and precautionary measure.
