Twitter shuts down two of its three offices in India

Twitter Inc. has shut its offices two of its three offices in India and told its staff to work from home as part of the cost-cutting drive in the company after Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover, according to a report by financial news agency Bloomberg.

The social media giant has closed its offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and will function only from its Bengaluru office, the report said, citing “people familiar with the matter. “

Twitter had abruptly sacked 90% of its staff in India in November as part of its global policy to slash costs put in place by Musk.

Although Twitter has millions of users in India including Prime Minister Narendra Modi who alone has 86.5 million followers social media platform.

However, with the drastic slashing of staff in the fast-growing Indian market it remains to be seen how the company will handle its operations and regulatory issues with skeletal staff.

Twitter is fighting a case at the Karnataka High Court, opposing the goverment’s orders to block certain Twitter accounts.

The company’s public policy team is responsible for interacting with lawmakers and civil society on issues including free speech, privacy and online safety. It handles requests from governments and civil rights groups to remove problematic content and sets rules to protect vulnerable users. But how this task will be handled with a handful of staff could pose a problem, according to social media analysts.

Twitter has also defaulted in the payment of millions of dollars as rent for its offices in San Francisco and London offices. It is being sued by several contractors over unpaid services.
