Govt pulls up Ola and Uber for being unfair to consumers

<p>
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued notices to Ola and Uber, the two online ride hailing platforms for unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights. </p>
<p>
As many as 2,482 grievances were registered by consumers against Ola and 770 grievances were registered against Uber between April 1, 2021 to May 1, 2022, according to data from the National Consumer Helpline.</p>
<p>
The grievances registered by consumers against Ola and Uber include those related to deficiency in services, overcharging, unauthorised charging and paid amount not refunded, </p>
<p>
According to an official statement, last week the CCPA took up the issues of lack of proper consumer grievance redressal mechanism, deficiency in service and unreasonable levy of cancellation charges by Ola and Uber.</p>
<p>
The issue of ensuring that the algorithm used to charge fares by the online cab-hailing companies is operated fairly was also discussed.</p>
