Former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry has died in a road accident today. The accident took place at around 3.15 pm near Mumbai after his car hit a divider. The Maharashtra government has ordered a detailed probe into the incident.

The 54 year old Mistry was the younger son of Pallonji Mistry, head of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, who died in June this year at the age of 93.

Mistry was on his way to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. Four people were in the car.  While two people survived, Mistry and another person were killed on the spot. The other survivors have been rushed to a hospital.

Mistry took over as the Tata Group chairman in 2012 but was removed in 2016.

Mistry’s body has been taken to the Kasa Rural Hospital for postmortem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock over the incident. “The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess. His passing away is a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

Mistry is survived by his wife and two sons.
