Watch: Mahabharata era fascinating Bhimkund pool in Madhya Pradesh

One look at Bhimkund located in Madhya Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region is enough to become mesmerised with its blue waters. Yet, there is more to this pool situated close to Chattarpur district’s Bajna village.

Video:

The reservoir is said to be more than 5,000 years old and is connected with the great Indian epic Mahabharata. According to a story, when the Pandava brothers were in exile for 13 years along Draupadi with their wife, they reached this place.

Draupadi felt thirsty and fainted. Concerned with her plight, Bhim, the strongest of the brothers used his gada or mace to hit on the ground which led to water spring forth and creating the pool. Hence, the name Bhimkund. In fact, there is a small opening on the cave roof where Bhim is said to have struck the mace.

There is also another legend associated with the place. One of Lord Vishnu’s greatest devotees Narada sang Gandharva Gaanam or celestial song which pleased the God and he came out of the pool. Lord Vishnu’s complexion made the water turn blue.

This gave the pool the names Neel kund or Narada kund.

Many believe that the pool is not measurable and no has been able to reach its bottom.
