UP Police Honours Bundelkhand’s First Woman Auto Driver

Anita Chaudhary took to driving autorickshaw to become self-reliant and support her family

Breaking of the glass ceiling is taking place not just at the top echelons of the society but at all levels. Take the example of Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand. It now now boasts of its first female autorickshaw driver, Anita Chaudhary.

Chaudhary was felicitated by the Uttar Pradesh police recently. They congratulated and lauded her attempts to “become self-independent”.

As per the various media reports, Chaudhary was motivated to take up driving autorickshaw when she happened to see a woman doing the same in Madhya Pradesh’s Orchha.

With the objective of supporting her family, Chaudhary financed an auto and mastered the art of driving. Her family members were initially reluctant and even opposed her move but later accepted her decision.

Chaudhary now drives her auto from four in the morning till 10 at night.

The award given to Chaudhary was under the phase three of Mission Shakti, which is an initiative by the UP Government directed at strengthening safety of women and their empowerment.

On the occasion of felicitation event, the Deputy Inspector General, Jhansi Jogendra Yadav said: “It is an admirable and pleasant change that women are entering occupations such as auto-driving that are traditionally male-dominated.” The official went on to add that through Mission Shakti UP Police wanted the women to feel safe and going beyond safety, also encourage them to work to become independent and self-reliant.

Giving a twist to the event, the senior police officials who were there to participate in the award ceremony, went on a ride in Chaudhary’s auto. They went all the way to the women’s police station where this remarkable woman driver was honoured.
