Tamil Nadu’s “Karate Bahu” entertains wedding guests with deadly martial art

The newly wed wielding the stick gave a scintillating performance of martial arts

It looks like a long fight sequence from an Indian commercial movie, where a young girl in all her bridal finery wields a stick like a professional fighter! Well, P. Nisha, she is a martial artist alright and is the heroine of our real world and not of the tinsel world.

After Nisha’s marriage was solemnised the relatives, friends, and family, assembled on the occasion at Thirukolur village in Tamil Nadu, were in for a treat, a live demonstration of her skills in wielding different weapons. The 22-year-old enthralled the gathering as they watched in awe performing some fast and unbelievable.

Nisha performed in an open space, wherein her wedding was scheduled to be held in the Thirukolur village.

Nisha was encouraged and goaded by her mother Mani, to learn the martial arts. Among the diverse arts, Mani wanted Nisha to learn the Tamil form of martial art, called Silambam. Mani believes that each and every girl must know the art in order to stay fit and healthy, while being able to protect themselves and others.

Rajkumar, who is Nisha’s husband, therefore, decided to add a martial arts performance amid their wedding ceremonies to entertain guests and create awareness about Silambam as well.

So with all the marriage rituals complete, Nisha, dressed in her wedding attire and traditional jewellery, started giving martial arts performances, and this indeed was the highlight of the marriage. She was not alone as after sometime her classmates also joined in.

Nisha’s 30-minute performance was to create awareness among girls about learning self-defence. She said: “It was not easy to perform in a sari and with the heavy make up as a bride. I used to practise martial arts in a t-shirt and track pants.”

Nisha performed several kinds of Silambam Adimurai with a long stick. With the Silambam sticks she carried out “Rettai Kambu” on a cement road in front of the wedding hall. What indeed took the cake was her performance with the “Surul Vaal”, the flexible sword with ease as the guests were awestruck.

Nisha is a B.Com graduate and aspires to become a police officer, Nisha, said that she was grateful to her parents, mother Mani and father Perumal, for encouraging her. "I was encouraged by my parents and relatives to learn the art from a young age,” Nisha told India Today Television.

She had started learning traditional martial arts such as ‘Silambam’, ‘Surul Vaal’, ‘Adimurai’, ‘Kalarippayattu’, and ‘Theepantham’ (fireball) three years ago as a final year college student.

Her husband, Rajkumar added that it is necessary to create awareness about martial arts and also replace traditional events with it to encourage people to learn it. This strengthens mental health as well, he said.
