Russian rescue dog, Monika is back on her four prosthetic titanium paws

The Russian rescue dog is indeed lucky as she has got a new lease of life after being fitted with four prosthetic titanium paws.

The cost of the procedure was indeed very expensive and was paid for by a crowd-funding campaign.

Even though weak two weeks after the operation, she is expected to be back on her feet soon.

Sergei Gorshkov, the veterinarian who did this challenging operation said: "Luck and experience played its part.” Native of Siberian city of Novosibirsk, this 33-year-old vet has had the experience of fitting artificial limbs of more than 30 furry animals which includes a cat on whom he did a quadruple transplant.

This was the first time he operated on a dog.

Volunteers found Monika in a forest near Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia. She was found in a bloody state as her four legs were stumps.

Gorshkov, talking to AFP, said: "Nobody really knows what happened to her. Some volunteers think that somebody cut her paws off out of cruelty.”

Monika, whose age is estimated to be between two and four years may have died like thousand others had it not been for Alla Leonkina, the volunteer from Krasnodar, who along with her friend took care for nearly a year.

On coming to know about Gorshkov's clinic, Leonkina started an online campaign to finance the surgery and almost a month later 400,000 roubles or $5,400 had been collected. It also helped Monika to get the prosthetic titanium legs that were made using a 3D printer.

According to the vet, Monika's bones will grow and adapt to the artificial limbs "like antlers on a deer".
