Nilgai calf rescued from ferocious dogs in Delhi

<strong>A hapless Nilgai which was attacked by feral dogs and injured was rescued by the Wildlife SOS in West Delhi’s Bakkarwala.</strong></p>
<p>
The NGO’s Rapid Response Unit received a call on their 24-hour rescue helpline on Friday evening, informing about a nilgai calf which was in need of medical aid. The helpless antelope was injured by a pack of feral dogs near Durga Mata Mandir in Bakkarwala.</p>
<p>
A concerned citizen had moved the animal to the temple for safety till the rescue team arrived.</p>

The rescue unit on arriving at the spot could find no sign of the mother and therefore moved the baby nilgai to the NGO’s transit facility for treatment.</p>
<p>
Sharing details about the calf, Wasim Akram, Deputy Director, Special Projects for Wildlife SOS, said: “The nilgai has sustained superficial injuries in the back region. The animal is under immense stress and is currently receiving medical treatment.”</p>
<p>
Endemic to India, the Nilgai or Blue Bull is the largest Asian antelope faces threats like hunting, human-wildlife conflict, deforestation and habitat degradation. They are considered as pests by farmers in several north Indian States.</p>
