Neeraj Chopra wins historic silver medal at World Athletics Championships in USA

Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in the men's javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships at Oregon in the USA on Sunday to become only the second Indian to achieve the feat a year after winning an Olympic gold medal in the event.

Chopra’s best throw of 88.13 metres came in his fourth attempt.

Grenada's Anderson Peters won the gold medal with a best throw of 90.54 metres. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch won the bronze with a best throw of 88.09 metres, while Germany's Julian Weber finished 4th with a best attempt of 86.86 metres.

Long jumper Anju Bobby George who won the bronze in 2003 is the only other Indian to have ever won a medal at the event. Chopra scripted history as he became the first Indian man to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Neeraj Chopra for the outstanding performance. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, "A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours."

Jai Hind! @Neeraj_chopra1," tweeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath.

Meanwhile, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur wrote, "Neeraj Chopra continues his winning streak! Wins in Men's javelin throw at @WCHoregon22 with his best throw of 88.13m, becoming the 1st Indian male and 2nd Indian to win a medal at the #WorldChampionships! Neeraj has now won a medal at every Global event!"

Your hard work has paid off & you've given India yet another reason to celebrate after Tokyo Olympics," tweeted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also congratulated Neeraj Chopra for the “commendable achievement.”

"Congratulate @Neeraj_chopra1 for a scintillating silver medal performance at the World Athletics Championships. A commendable achievement that will take Indian sport forward," Jaishankar tweeted.
