In an extremely rare incident, a sanitation worker in Chennai found a 100-gram gold coin while she was sorting out garbage in the Tiruvottiyur area of the city. The worker, Mary, has won all-round praise for her honesty as she immediately handed over the coin to the police, who in turn returned it to its owner on Sunday.

She was segregating the waste in the city’s Tiruvottiyur zone for disposal when she was surprised to find a gold coin wrapped in a polythene cover tumbling out. At first she thought it was an ordinary piece of metal, but on closer examination was surprised to find that it was a gold coin.

She immediately informed her supervisor and they decided to give the coin to the local police. Sathangadu police had already received a complaint from one Ganesh Raman of Annamalai Nagar in Tiruvottiyur who works for a courier company. His wife had thrown the gold coin, which was wrapped in a polythene cover, by mistake along with other household waste in the garbage bin.

The coin was handed over to Ganesh Raman. The police were all praise for Mary, who struggles to make the two ends meet but did not even for a moment hesitate to hand over the gold to be returned to its rightful owner.
