Catwalk protest by Bhopal women wakes up authorities

Women doing catwalk in Danish Nagar protesting against potholed roads

Protest is a way of drawing attention to the issue in hand. But what to do when this effort fails? The residents and inhabitants of locality – Danish Nagar — situated near Hoshangabad Road in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, found a way.

These residents adopted a novel approach in order to get the attention of the authorities to their problems created by potholed roads in the area. They held a mock outdoor fashion show in which the women of Danish Nagar did a catwalk with broken, pothole-laden roads as their runway.

All the participants of this show were dressed in sarees and were seen navigating their way through waterlogged potholes with dexterity. By doing this they created awareness about the state of the roads and the urgency to repair them.

The women while conducting this catwalk also demanded that the colony be handed over to the municipal corporation. They said, in case it is not done, all residents would stop paying property tax.

Talking to India Today the residents of Danish Nagar said they had raised their concern about these roads several times but it was not resolved. A resident said: “Because of the huge potholes on the roads, accidents are happening every day. Yet the roads are not being repaired. What are we paying taxes for?”

Earlier too a clipping of the roads was posted on Twitter. The post states: “As the rain increase, the condition of the roads becomes worse in Danish Nagar, Bhopal, MP. How are we supposed to transit now? Please answer.”
