Bengaluru station to sell GI tagged Channapatna toys and dolls

Bengaluru railway station saw brisk sale of Channapatna toys and dolls which are made locally

Bengaluru’s Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Railway Station became the first station of South Western Railway to sell Channapatna toys under the One Station, One Product (OSOP) scheme which the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget.

Last week, the Stall of Channapatna toys was inaugurated by Shyam Singh, the Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager.

Channapatna toys which have received the Geographical Indicator (GI) tag are special dolls and wooden toys manufactured in Channapatna town. This town which is situated in Ramanagara district of Karnataka is popularly known as Gombegala Ooru or Toy Town.

In a statement released by the SWR it was mentioned that “Bengaluru Division had allotted a stall on pilot basis for promotion of Channapatna toys to V Prakash, a local craftsman associated with Channapatna Handicrafts Artists Association.”

The objective of this Ministry of Railway initiative is to encourage and promote local products at railway stations under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan which is to make the country self-reliant. This scheme will help the artisans and craftsmen of the region to sell their products easily and effectively.

In their note, SWR said that the stall will be functional with easy access to passengers.

Further, SWR mentioned that in future there are plans to launch this scheme in other stations that come under its jurisdiction in Karnataka and Goa.

This news was also tweeted by the State Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai who wrote: “It is heartening to see the stall for our Channapatana toys, the wooden toys and dolls with GI tag in KSR Bengaluru Railway Station under '1 Station-1 Product' scheme. This project will support our Artisans. These Stalls would also be ambassador of our culture & art.”
