8 killed, several injured as fire from e-scooter showroom spreads to hotel in Secunderabad

Eight people were killed and several injured after a massive fire broke out at an electric scooter showroom and then spread to a hotel on the upper floors of the same building at Secunderabad in Telangana late last night.

According to Hyderabad Police, the fire broke out at the charging unit of the electric scooter showroom on the ground floor of the building. Following this, people on the upper floors got trapped in smoke.

There were 25 guests staying in Ruby Hotel that got engulfed in the blaze and the Fire Department rescued several people using crane ladders. Some locals also joined the rescue efforts.

Videos show some people trying to jump out from the hotel windows in a bid to escape the fire.

The injured have been admitted to hospital for treatment and fire engines are at the spot trying to douse the flames, said Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand.

“Fire brigade teams tried their best to rescue people from the lodge but due to heavy smoke, some people died. We are investigating how the incident happened,” Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mehmood Ali said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the family members of the people who died in the blaze and Rs 50,000 each for those who are injured.
