464-year-old temple pond in Telangana to get facelift

The historic 464-year-old temple tank located in the famous Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple or the Yadagirigutta temple in Telangana will undergo a makeover. This has been decided by the Government and a sum of Rs.1 crore has been allocated by the Endowments Department to develop the temple tank.

The pedda koneru or the tank which is in the temple premises is believed to have been constructed in 1564 CE during the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya in the region.

The temple pond or pushkarini as it is known as, has stairs going downwards on all the four sides. As per the belief of the locals, at the bottom of the pond a golden temple is located where special poojas were performed.

As per the historians in the year 1832 the temple pond had completely dried up during Dokkala Karuvu or the Guntur famine when lakhs of people and thousands of livestock died due to starvation.

The tank was restored later but after 1970 it was neglected. Recently, the Government took notice of it and decided to take action. Apart from allocation of funds, experts were roped in for excavating the pond and several historical structures were discovered during the digging.

The temple authorities have also allotted Rs.50 lakhs for the development of the pond.
