Watch: Thousands bid farewell to football icon Pele

Football legend Pele has been laid to rest after his coffin was taken through the streets of Santos in Brazil, to allow the public to pay their final respects to the sporting legend.

The 82-year-old, regarded by many as the world’s best footballer died on December 29.

Pele’s coffin arrived in Santos on Monday, where thousands of mourners paid their respects at the ground of his former club.

On Tuesday, fans stood outside the Urbano Caldeira stadium before the casket left the venue. Supporters waved massive black and white banners– the colours of Santos Football Club. Several sported the number 10 shirt that Pele had turned iconic.

“Only Pele, 1,000 goals,” they repeatedly chanted amid drum beats and dancing on the streets.

His body carried on a customary fire engine passed through the streets for seven kilometres of Santos while helicopters flew overhead.
