Two dogs sentenced to death in Pakistan

While terrorists get a safe “haven”, animals can’t hope for such hospitality in chaotic Pakistan.

In a bizarre incident, a Pakistani court has approved “hanging” of two pet dogs for attacking a lawyer in Karachi. This was followed by a court case and finally a compromise was reached between the lawyer and the dogs' owner.

The incident happened last month on June 21 morning when two German Shepherd pet dogs of a neighbour attacked the lawyer Mirza Akhter Ali when he was out for his morning walk as reported by the Pakistani daily Dawn.

In his police complaint against the owner Humayun Khan, a former police officer, the lawyer said that his dogs pounced on him and tackled him to the ground as he helplessly tried to defend himself. The dogs were not on a leash. In a CCTV video, submitted in the court, it is seen that the owner and his helpers were seen trying to rescue the advocate from the clutches of the canines. The victim blamed the owner for his serious injuries. He had to undergo a four-hour surgery as his arms and ribs were badly damaged in the gruesome incident.

Although legal proceedings in the case were under way, a compromise was reached between the lawyer and the dogs' owner to settle the matter.

According to the compromise reached between the two parties, it was decided that, “the two dogs involved in the incident will be euthanized/put down by a veterinarian immediately. Any other such dogs that Humayun Khan has, he shall give them away.”

Another condition of the compromise states that the dog owner will register any other canines with the Clifton Cantonment Board (CBC) and not let out any other pet dog onto the street unless they are with a “properly trained handler”, leashed and muzzled.

The final clause of the compromise agreement states that Humayun will donate Rs1 million to ACF Animal Rescue – a local animal shelter, reports the daily.

This incident has been a debate point on the social media in Pakistan. While one group one says that pet owners are responsible for the behaviour of their pets while the other says pets shouldn't be kept at all.

Meanwhile, the two “accused” will be “killed” by a veterinarian "immediately".
