Sindhis seek international action against Pakistan citing enforced disappearances

A delegation of World Sindhi Congress (WSC) and Voice for Missing Persons of Sindh (VMPS) has urged a United Nations Working Group to put international pressure on Pakistan to stop the brutal practice of enforced disappearances that is targeting the Sindhi people.

In a video meeting with the UN Working Group on Involuntary or Enforced Disappearances (WGEID) on Friday, the relatives of the victims narrated, first hand, their heart-wrenching testimonies before the international panel.

"Delegation informed WGEID while some victims are released, more are picked up by agencies to keep an atmosphere of fear and persecution prevalent and courts provide no justice. It was then agreed to increase pressure on Pakistan to stop brutal practice and recover the abducted ones," the WSC said after the meeting while thanking the UN group for their "valuable" support.

One of the Working Group's primary tasks is to assist families in determining the fate or whereabouts of their family members who have reportedly disappeared. In that humanitarian capacity, the Working Group serves as a channel of communication between family members of victims of enforced disappearance and other sources reporting cases of disappearances, and the governments concerned.

The World Sindhi Congress has also organised a rally in London on June 6 to protest the illegal occupation and appropriation of the valuable land and resources of indigenous Sindhis in Karachi.

The rally will be held at 10 Downing Street.

The organisation has alleged that the practice of occupying vast areas of most valuable lands of Sindhi people, agricultural and particularly residential, has geared unprecedented pace in the last decade.

"Scores of vast residential schemes have emerged, and some completed, including DHA City, Bahria Town, Commander City, and many more. This is taking place with utter disregard of the historical, political, economic rights of the Sindhi people. This occupation of lands is taking place sponsored by the Pakistani military establishment in collaboration with their proxies," says WSC.

It said that attacks, violence, and brutal force is being used by Bahria Town goons on innocent residents of villages of Sindhis in the Malir district of Karachi.

The organisation says that the situation on the ground is alarming as the state, government, and its institutions including judiciary and police are partners in this crime.

The Sindhi body continues to raise the matter with the international community, including the UN, to apprise them of the ruthless occupation destroying centuries-old communities which is in contravention of the international laws, treaties, and conventions.

"The only hope, like in the past, is the struggle of the Sindhi people. We request all political parties, civil society and human rights organizations, journalists, and individuals with a conscience to raise voice and offer resistance against these crimes against humanity," says WSC.
