India says it will continue to play a constructive role to resolve Myanmar situation

India has welcomed the stand taken by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Myanmar. Ministry of external affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Sunday said that India will to play a constructive role that will help in resolve the current situation.</p>

“India, as a friend of the people of Myanmar will continue to play a constructive ad meaningful role aimed at resolving the current situation in Myanmar. India’s support to the democratic process in Myanmar remains steadfast,” Bagchi said. </p>

On Saturday the 10 member ASEAN reached at a consensus on Myanmar with the aim to end the crisis in the country while stopping the killing of civilian protesters.</p>

Myanmar’s military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing took over the country through a coup on February 1. An IANS report said that in the past few weeks, the military has been increasing its use of force against protesters – with one incident earlier this month in the city of Bago seeing more than 80 people killed.</p>
<p>
Mass protests have been held in the country since the coup. The military has however promised it would hold "free and fair" elections once the state of emergency is over.</p>
