Former opposition lawmaker gets death penalty for committing crimes against humanity during Bangladesh Liberation War

<strong>Former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Abdul Momin Talukder also known as Khoka has been served a death penalty for committing crimes against humanity in Bogra’s Adamdighi during the 1971 Liberation War.The International Crimes Tribunal 1 has handed down the death penalty to the 69 year old Momin, who was tried in absentia, in a case filed for committing crimes against humanity in Bogra’s Adamdighi as a Razakar commander.</strong></p>
<p>
A three-member panel, led by ICT-1 Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam, delivered the verdict.</p>
<p>
Momin was slapped with three charges of crimes against humanity including that of murder and genocide of 19 people and arson attacks on 19 houses after looting.</p>

According to <a href="https://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/court/2021/11/24/war-crimes-verdict-against-ex-bnp-mp-wednesday">Dhaka Tribune</a>, Momin’s father Abdul Majid Talukder, chairman of the local Peace Committee, served as a lawmaker three times. “He used to help his father and the Pakistani military commit crimes,” the report said, adding that the war crimes case was filed against him in March 2011 by a freedom fighter of Kayetpara village in a local court. The case was later forwarded to the International Crimes tribunal.</p>
<p>
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Commission also launched an investigation into the alleged illegal wealth amassed by the BNP leader.</p>
<p>
The Financial Express reported in 2019 that the national anti-graft agency said it found illicit assets worth Tk 30 million owned by Momin Talukder, his wife and two daughters.</p>
